Hello!

My name is Hanyoung Byun [hanjʌ̹ŋ b̥jʌ̹n], a second-year PhD student in the Department of Linguistics at UC Santa Cruz. My primary research interests are phonology, phonetics, and the interface between the two.

More specifically, I’m interested in whether there is a meaningful distinction between phonological representations and phonetic representations. Currently, I’m working on consonant voicing and vowel devoicing processes in two languages: Seoul Korean and Tohoku Japanese.

My primary advisor is Ryan Bennett.
